As Australia’s national policing agency, the AFP protects Australians and Australia’s interests.

Our role is to enforce Commonwealth and Australian Capital Territory criminal law and protect Commonwealth interests from criminal activity in Australia and overseas. We work closely with domestic and international partners to combat complex, transnational serious and organised crime impacting Australia’s national security.

The AFP also has responsibility for providing policing services to the Australian Capital Territory and Australia’s territories, including Christmas Island, Cocos Islands, Norfolk Island and Jervis Bay.

Through SHIELD, the AFP delivers health, safety and wellbeing services to all AFP employees around Australia and offshore. SHIELD has a strong focus on education, prevention and early intervention. Our mission is to enable Command to optimise AFP capability through active management of health and wellbeing risks. Our vision is to ensure the AFP embraces an operationally focussed and sustainable safety culture.

SHIELD is currently seeking to appoint a Deputy Chief Medical Officer (DCMO).

The Deputy Chief Medical Officer has direct supervision and leadership of the AFP Medical Officer community and will contribute to the provision of strategic guidance for health services within the AFP in support of AFP operations.  The DCMO will assist with the technical oversight of AFP health services including internal and contracted capabilities and providing technical authority and guidance to SHIELD multidisciplinary Teams.  The role will also provide high level advice and input into the development of policy on a range of health issues and contribute to contemporary and relevant clinical governance framework, in support of the delivery of safe and high-quality health services.  The role will contribute to the development and implementation of medical standards, in accordance with inherent requirements, to support fitness for role assessments including (but not limited to) recruit entry, pre and post deployment, and specialist roles.

To be eligible to apply for this role you must meet the following mandatory requirements:

  1. Be an Australian Citizen at time of application;
  2. Have a minimum of 5 years’ post graduate experience in primary health care and or occupational health care settings;
  3. Have current unconditional and unrestricted registration as a Medical Practitioner, General in Australia with the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency (AHPRA);
  4. Have or is eligible to achieve a Fellowship of a relevant specialist college, for example the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (FRACGP), Fellowship of the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (FACRRM) or vocational registration, or Fellowship of the Australasian Faculty of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (FAFOEM);*

The AFP’s ideal Applicant will have the following key skills and competencies:

  • Broad experience in all or some of evidence-based primary health care, travel medicine, sports medicine and/ or occupational medicine;
  • Demonstrated experience working in and for complex operational environments such as defence, emergency response or other government organisations;
  • Experience with working with senior leaderships teams in both health care and operational settings;
  • Proven experience in working collaboratively within, providing clinical oversight and leadership to multi-disciplinary health teams;
  • Well-developed risk-informed analytical skills;
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and stakeholder management skills; and
  • Demonstrated ability in building and maintaining relationships in a large, complex, and fast- paced environment.
